Today my friend D and I took out littlest kids (her son and my daughter, who are both 3 and a half) to Cabinteely park for the Books in the Park day organised by DLR libraries. It was fantastic. Given that we had two very small children with us we didn't get to do a lot, BUT we listened to talks by both Pauline McGlyn (Mrs. Doyle from Father Ted) and living legend Don Conroy.

I bought my daughter one of Don's books "On Silent Wings" which is about owls. E has always had a thing for owls. When she was just learning to speak (in the whole mama/dada period) we went to the zoo and saw the snowy owls. So her third ever word was "Owl". We got Don to sign the book and I told him this story so he drew her an owl inside the cover. It's so gorgeous! She is far too young for the book just yet, but when she gets older she is going to treasure it.

For those of us who grew up with the Den, Zig & Zag and RTE 2, Don Conroy is a living legend. Writer, illustrator and wildlife artist, he was like your uncle on tv, telling funny stories and drawing pictures for you on the telly every evening. He's as lovely in real life. I stil remember Zig and Zag (irreverent puppet presenters of the Den) singing, to the tune of Ghostbusters "Who you gonna call? Don Conroy!" It rang around my head all the time we talked ot him.

We also met Oisín McGann again, who signed a Mad Grandad book for my son and invited him to Pcon in the future! :D

And Pauline McGlynn is of course a hoot!

We had a great afternoon, during which D inadvertantly flirted with the man selling coffee, ice cream and hot chocolate - bad girl D! - and then went to buy the kids new shoes. As you do. So a sort of writerly day, if only briefly and distractedly, but maybe we'll pick up something special by osmosis?
